Smart Illumination Yokohama is an international art event based on the concept of combining environmental and energy-saving technologies with art, and was among the first endeavors to recommend the importance of creating environmentally friendly night views in light of the Great East Japan Earthquake that struck in March 2011. Instead of boasting the amount of light sources or how much they glitter, the event is designed to raise awareness about how people will live their lives in the future, sharing the rich darkness of the night with citizens and visitors alike, and cultivating a new vision for urban life.
